Drum #101-12E "Ohio Wild Cherry"

Drum Description:

This is the 12th drum in my E-series 15 inch drumhead diameter drums.

The drum shell is made up of five laminated wood layers. The inside and outside layers are made from some very special old growth wild cherry wood. This wood came from the farm I was raised on near Farmington, Ohio ("sacred wood").

The handle is fashioned from laminates of this same cherry wood.

The middle three layers are made from kiln dried Douglas fir wood.

The joints between the laminates on the outside layer are filled wood filler dyed to match the darker heart wood and v-grooved for a nice paneling effect.

The outside layer laminates were flip-flopped to give some pleasing mirror images of the wood grains.

The steel anchor band and tuning hooks were electro-plated with polished brass.

The tuning nuts, Thread Caps, and hold-down band are solid brass.

The goat skin was tie-dyed with a dye solution I made by boiling sawdust and scraps from the cherry wood used in making the drum.

I form every thing in my  shop including the tuning hardware. I do however have a local business that electroplates the hardware for me.

The sound qualities are super. A rich and deep sounding bass, wonderful tones, slaps, and high ringing rim shots.
